What is Ultrasound Therapy?
Ultrasound therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-frequency sound waves to treat various medical conditions, particularly in physical therapy and rehabilitation settings. The sound waves, typically in the range of 1–3 MHz, penetrate soft tissues to promote healing, reduce pain, and improve blood flow.

Types of Ultrasound Therapy

  1. Thermal Ultrasound Therapy

    • Increases tissue temperature

    • Promotes blood flow and muscle relaxation

    • Used for chronic conditions (e.g., joint contractures, scar tissue)

  2. Mechanical (Non-Thermal or Pulsed) Ultrasound Therapy

    • Causes microscopic gas bubbles to oscillate (cavitation)

    • Enhances cellular repair and reduces inflammation

    • Used for acute injuries and soft tissue damage

How It Works

  • The transducer (probe) is applied to the skin with a gel to ensure sound wave transmission.

  • Sound waves vibrate tissues at a cellular level.

  • Energy absorption can lead to:

    • Increased blood flow

    • Decreased inflammation

    • Stimulation of collagen production

    • Acceleration of tissue repair

Common Uses

  • Tendonitis (e.g., rotator cuff)

  • Ligament injuries

  • Muscle strains and spasms

  • Bursitis

  • Scar tissue and joint stiffness

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Osteoarthritis
